Westport, formerly known as Murdock Village, was formed as a mixed-use planned community in public-private partnership with Charlotte County. The development is comprised of 452 acres between US 41 and El Jobean, west of the Flamingo Waterway. Public infrastructure improvements on 75 acres were conveyed to the county, leaving 377 acres available for development.
Located within 10 minutes of West Villages in southern Sarasota County, Westport is within easy driving distance to the Tampa Bay Rays and the Atlanta Braves Spring training facilities, beaches at Boca Grande, and the Punta Gorda Airport, along with schools, a hospital and retail centers.
In 2019, the Kolter Group acquired the land for more than 1,000 new homes and 300 apartments. In addition, 200,000 square feet of commercial space and a 150-room hotel are planned for the Commons at Westport portion of the project by the Fort Myers-based Private Equity Group.
Charlotte County, the previous owner of the Murdock Village property since 2006, still owns 120 acres on the eastern side, where additional development is proposed.
